Venice Film Festival 2026: The Practical Guide to Tickets, Red Carpets, Premieres and Getting to the Lido
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival — Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica — runs from 2 to 12 September 2026, with a pre-opening event scheduled for 1 September. This guide explains how the festival works in practice.
The 83rd Venice International Film Festival — Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica — runs from 2 to 12 September 2026, with a pre-opening event scheduled for 1 September.
For first-time visitors, the most important detail is geographical: the festival does not primarily take place around Piazza San Marco. Its main screenings, premieres and red-carpet arrivals are concentrated on the Lido di Venezia, particularly around the Palazzo del Cinema, Palazzo del Casinò and Hotel Excelsior.
The 2026 Official Selection includes 90 new feature films, with 21 titles competing in Venezia 83 and filmmakers from 62 countries represented.
For anyone planning a trip around premieres, celebrity arrivals or industry meetings, Venice requires more preparation than most film festivals. A film ticket, accreditation, invitation and red-carpet access are four different things. Water transport needs to be planned in advance. And the most important screenings can change the traffic pattern on the Lido for an entire evening.
This guide explains how the festival works in practice.
Where the Venice Film Festival Actually Takes Place
The centre of the festival is the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido, on Lungomare Marconi.
Its Sala Grande is the principal theatre for official premieres, opening and closing events and many of the festival's most closely watched screenings. The main red carpet is installed outside the Palazzo del Cinema.
Nearby, the Palazzo del Casinò contains additional screening rooms and festival facilities, while venues such as Sala Darsena, Sala Giardino and PalaBiennale host further sections of the programme.
The Hotel Excelsior plays a separate role. It remains one of the key social and industry addresses during the festival and hosts much of the Venice Production Bridge on its third floor.
For visitors choosing accommodation, this distinction matters. Staying near San Marco may sound more convenient for a Venice holiday, but anyone attending two or three screenings per day will repeatedly need to cross the lagoon.
For guests whose schedule is built around the festival itself, staying on the Lido can considerably simplify logistics.

Can Members of the Public Attend the Festival?
Yes.
Venice is more accessible to the general public than its red-carpet image sometimes suggests.
La Biennale sells tickets to a substantial number of screenings, including many official evening premieres in Sala Grande.
However, not every major event is publicly ticketed.
The Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony are invitation-only. Accreditation does not automatically provide access to either.
This distinction is particularly important for private clients and concierge companies. A ticket for an evening film in Sala Grande should never be presented as an invitation to the official ceremony.
Public tickets remain relatively accessible compared with many other international cultural events.
For 2026, Sala Grande pricing varies according to screening time.
Approximate screening time
Standard price
Around 15:00
€18
Around 17:00
€25
Prime evening slot around 19:30

Around 22:00

Midnight

PalaBiennale screenings are generally around €12–15, while Sala Darsena tickets are around €15.
Tickets are personal and cannot simply be transferred to another guest.
Arrival time also matters. La Biennale states that admission closes shortly before the scheduled screening and that entry is not permitted once the film has started.
For an important Sala Grande premiere, arriving at the venue only a few minutes before the listed time is not advisable.
Does a Sala Grande Ticket Include the Red Carpet?
No.
This is probably the most important misconception to correct before travelling to Venice.
There are several different levels of red-carpet access.
Anyone can watch the arrival of actors and directors from the designated public pedestrian areas outside the Palazzo del Cinema. No cinema ticket or accreditation is required to stand in the public viewing area.
The arrivals are also shown on large screens and through festival broadcasts.
A ticket to an evening Sala Grande screening gives access to the cinema but does not guarantee that its holder will be allowed to walk the official red carpet.
La Biennale may permit some ticket holders and accredited guests to use the carpet during the period before a screening, but access is controlled according to the circumstances of each premiere and may be restricted entirely on particularly busy evenings.
A concierge company should therefore never sell or describe an ordinary Sala Grande ticket as a guaranteed "red carpet ticket".
They are not the same product.
What Should You Wear?
For the main gala screenings in Sala Grande, La Biennale recommends formal attire.
The level of dress varies considerably outside these screenings. Daytime films, press screenings and industry meetings are far less formal.
Guests planning several events in the same day should check the exact screening category rather than assuming that the entire festival follows a black-tie dress code.
Venice 2026: The Main Red-Carpet Dates
La Biennale does not publish a separate document called a "red carpet schedule".
The most useful way to anticipate arrivals is to follow the principal afternoon and evening screenings in Sala Grande. The festival states that filmmakers and cast members normally attend the official presentations of their films, although the presence of every individual actor cannot be guaranteed in advance.
The following calendar therefore combines confirmed official screening times with the announced casts of the films.

For visitors primarily interested in seeing international actors rather than attending every film, 2, 3, 5 and 8 Septemberare among the dates worth prioritising.
Attendance can still change at short notice, so cast lists should not be treated as confirmed arrival lists.
Which Stars Are Confirmed for Venice 2026?
It is useful to distinguish between a performer being listed in a film's cast and a performer whose physical presence at the festival has been separately announced.
George Clooney is part of the official programme as the recipient of the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and is scheduled to participate in a public festival masterclass.
Ellen Burstyn, also receiving a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, has a masterclass in the programme.
Other official masterclass participants include filmmakers and cinematographers such as Chloé Zhao, Łukasz Żal, Luc Besson and Luca Guadagnino.
Guadagnino is also due to receive the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award.
Maggie Gyllenhaal serves as president of the Venezia 83 jury. The jury also includes Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat and Johnnie To.
Among the films themselves, the 2026 competition brings together an unusually recognisable group of actors.
Robert Pattinson stars in Primetime.
Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem lead Bunker, alongside Stephen Graham, Paul Dano and Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Wild Horse Nine, directed by Martin McDonagh, includes John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Parker Posey and Tom Waits.
Werner Herzog's Bucking Fastard brings together sisters Rooney Mara and Kate Mara, with Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson.
The Echo Chamber features Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon.
These are official cast listings. Actual arrival on the Lido should be checked again shortly before each premiere.
The Films Most Likely to Define Venice 2026
Bunker — Florian Zeller
One of the clearest star-driven titles in the second half of the festival.
The film brings together Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Stephen Graham, Paul Dano and Patrick Schwarzeneggerand has a prime evening Sala Grande screening on 8 September.
For a private client with only one evening available and a priority on a high-profile premiere, this is one of the first screenings to investigate.
Primetime — Lance Oppenheim
Produced by A24, Primetime stars Robert Pattinson alongside Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo and Phoebe Bridgers.
Its 5 September Sala Grande screening places it on one of the strongest days of the festival for international attention.
Wild Horse Nine — Martin McDonagh
Martin McDonagh returns with a cast that includes John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and Parker Posey.
Its 3 September evening screening makes the first full day after the opening particularly significant.
Bucking Fastard — Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog's film pairs Rooney Mara and Kate Mara, with Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson also in the cast.
It screens in Sala Grande on 3 September, before Wild Horse Nine.
INK — Danny Boyle
The official opening film is directed by Danny Boyle and stars Jack O'Connell, Guy Pearce and Claire Foy.
The main Sala Grande presentation on 2 September forms part of the opening-night programme and is not an ordinary public gala ticket.
A separate public screening offers another route for viewers interested principally in the film rather than the ceremony.
Oasis: Don't Look Back in Anger
Although outside the Venezia 83 competition, the Oasis documentary may generate some of the largest crowds of the week.
Its 5 September late-evening premiere is associated with Liam and Noel Gallagher and comes after two other notable Sala Grande screenings on the same day.
Look Back — Hirokazu Koreeda
Hirokazu Koreeda's new film screens on 7 September.
For visitors following directors, critics and awards discussion rather than celebrity arrivals alone, it is one of the more consequential competition titles.
Possible Love — Lee Chang-dong
Lee Chang-dong returns with a cast including Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung and Cho Yeo-jeong.
The film screens in Sala Grande on 6 September.
The Echo Chamber — Andrea Pallaoro
The film is notable partly because Bernardo Bertolucci is credited among its screenwriters.
The principal cast includes Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon, with the official screening scheduled for 6 September.
Succederà questa notte — Nanni Moretti
Nanni Moretti appears alongside Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca.
Its evening screening on 5 September contributes to what is likely to be one of the busiest days around the Palazzo del Cinema.
Venice Production Bridge: The Dates That Matter to the Industry
For general visitors, the Venice Production Bridge may remain largely invisible.
For producers, financiers, family offices with film interests, distributors, entertainment lawyers and media executives, it changes the rhythm of the week.
The Venice Production Bridge runs from 3 to 9 September 2026, with its main business spaces at Hotel Excelsior.
The programme brings together producers with financiers, co-producers, funds, sales agents, distributors, broadcasters, streaming platforms, post-production companies and other decision-makers.
The Venice Gap-Financing Market takes place from 4 to 6 September, while the Book Adaptation Rights Market also runs from 4 to 6 September at the Excelsior.
As a result, 4–6 September is one of the most concentrated periods for visitors combining screenings with business.
Public water transport remains the simplest option for many visitors.
During the festival, ACTV strengthens connections between central Venice and the Lido, including services towards Lido Casinò, close to the principal festival venues.
From the San Marco and San Zaccaria area, festival transport to Lido Casinò is generally more practical than travelling first to Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta and then continuing across the island.
In 2026, ACTV is operating reinforced services during the festival, including Lines 20 and MC, with increased frequency during the day and extended evening connections after late screenings.
For travellers arriving with several suitcases, a short transfer window and an evening premiere on the same day, it may not be the most efficient option.
Private Water Taxi
A licensed private motorboat can take guests from Marco Polo Airport directly to the Lido or to many hotels in central Venice.
This is usually the most straightforward arrangement for private clients, particularly when several people are travelling together.
There is no single fixed festival tariff. Rates depend on operator, destination, time of day, luggage and access to the relevant landing point.
As a market reference rather than an official La Biennale tariff, published private-boat prices can be around €170 from Marco Polo to Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta and around €190 to Hotel Excelsior, with central-Venice hotel transfers starting at similar levels.
Concierge companies should obtain an all-in written quote before confirming the transfer.
This is one of the practical reasons accommodation needs to be chosen carefully.
A 19:30 screening can easily finish after 21:30. A 21:45 film may end close to midnight.
ACTV has extended festival services in 2026, making late public transport possible on many evenings.
Private clients, however, should consider booking their return boat in advance on the busiest nights.
The pickup location must also be precise. "Lido" is not sufficiently specific for an operational itinerary. Lido Casinò, Santa Maria Elisabetta and hotel landing stages are different locations.
On the nights of major premieres, additional time should be allowed for security, pedestrian controls and congestion around the Palazzo del Cinema.
Should You Stay on the Lido or in Central Venice?
There is no single answer.
If the trip is primarily about the festival — two or three screenings per day, meetings at Hotel Excelsior and repeated evening premieres — the Lido is logistically easier.
It removes the need to cross the lagoon between every part of the schedule.
If the trip combines the festival with dinners, meetings and events around San Marco, Dorsoduro or other parts of Venice, staying in the historic city may make more sense.
In that case, water transport should be treated as part of the itinerary rather than an afterthought.
A schedule that assumes a film ends at 22:00 and dinner in central Venice begins at 22:15 is not realistic. Leaving the cinema, moving through the crowd, reaching the landing stage and crossing the lagoon all take time.
The Four Types of Access Every First-Time Visitor Should Understand
The simplest way to avoid confusion is to separate film ticket, accreditation, invitation and red-carpet access.
A film ticket provides entry to a specific screening.
An accreditation is issued according to professional category — such as Press, Industry, Film Delegation or Cinema — and gives access to the corresponding festival facilities and screenings.
An invitation is different again. The organiser, studio, sponsor, film delegation or another authorised party determines the guest list.
Finally, red-carpet access is separately controlled.
A guest can therefore hold an expensive Sala Grande ticket without being invited to the Opening Ceremony and without having guaranteed permission to walk the carpet.
Conversely, anyone can watch the official arrivals from the public viewing area without purchasing a ticket.
For concierge teams, making this distinction clear before taking payment is essential.
If Money Is Not the Issue, Can You Buy Your Way Into Everything?
No.
A large budget solves many of the difficult parts of Venice: hotel availability, private boats, dedicated logistics, last-minute schedule changes and access to publicly available premium screenings.
It does not automatically create an invitation to a closed event.
Opening and Closing Ceremonies are controlled by guest lists.
Any genuine access must therefore come through a legitimate allocation — La Biennale, a studio, sponsor, brand partner, film delegation or another authorised host.
Offers on the secondary market should be treated cautiously, especially when they involve personalised tickets, accreditations or vague promises of "guaranteed red carpet access".
The Best Dates for a Short Venice Film Festival Trip
For a visitor who has only three or four days and wants a combination of films, major actors and visible festival activity, 3–6 September is one of the strongest windows.
On 3 September, Werner Herzog's Bucking Fastard is followed by Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine.
On 5 September, Robert Pattinson's Primetime is followed by Nanni Moretti's Succederà questa notte and the late Oasis documentary premiere.
On 6 September, the programme includes Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love and The Echo Chamber with Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon.
For a single high-profile evening later in the festival, 8 September is particularly notable because Bunker is scheduled in the principal evening slot, followed later by Casey Affleck's Company.
For guests focused on opening-night atmosphere, 2 September remains the obvious date, but the limitations must be understood in advance: the Opening Ceremony and principal opening presentation are not ordinary public-ticket events.
A Practical Concierge Brief
For private clients, every Venice Film Festival itinerary should contain the same operational information: exact screening, access type, guest name on the ticket, dress requirement, route to the Lido, primary boat transfer, backup transport, exact landing stage and the latest available information on cast attendance.
Opening and Closing invitations should be confirmed separately from ordinary cinema tickets.
Boat bookings should include a defined pickup point rather than simply "Lido".
For high-demand premieres, transport and restaurant reservations should include contingency time.
And cast attendance should be reconfirmed 24 to 48 hours before each screening whenever possible.
The most important rule remains simple:
A Sala Grande ticket is not the same as an invitation, and neither is automatically the same as red-carpet access.
The Venice Film Festival programme can still change close to individual screenings. Anyone travelling specifically for one actor, one premiere or one invitation-only event should recheck the official programme immediately before departure.
