A new generation of explorer yachts is changing private cruising priorities, with owners looking beyond established Mediterranean routes toward longer voyages, remote destinations and greater autonomy at sea.
Explorer yachts move from specialist vessels to private travel platforms
The rise of the explorer yacht reflects a shift in how some UHNW owners approach private travel. Instead of focusing only on seasonal Mediterranean cruising, a growing segment of buyers is looking for vessels capable of extended journeys, from polar waters to less accessible coastal regions.
The appeal is practical: greater range, increased storage capacity, stronger autonomy and layouts designed around longer stays on board. An expedition yacht is no longer defined only by rugged appearance; its value comes from the ability to support independent travel over significant distances.
Recent projects illustrate this direction. Green Yard Kleven introduced the KY100, a proposed 100-metre polar expedition yacht developed with Opalinski Design House and HAV Design. The project is presented as a build-ready platform rather than a completed yacht, with a Polar Class PC5 design, a developed technical specification and a focus on worldwide cruising capability.
Design priorities are changing
Modern long range superyachts increasingly combine expedition capability with residential standards. Owners are requesting larger tender capacity, equipment storage, private work areas and spaces suitable for longer periods away from traditional infrastructure.
Damen Yachting’s Xplorer range and large custom explorer projects from builders such as Feadship, Lürssen, Sanlorenzo and Benetti reflect this market direction. Damen’s Xplorer 60 platform, for example, was developed around extended cruising capability and access to remote regions.
Kleven’s previous large explorer yachts, including the 107-metre Andromeda, demonstrated how commercial-grade maritime engineering can be adapted into a private yacht environment with customised interiors and guest spaces.
Private yacht travel beyond familiar routes
For owners, the attraction is not simply reaching distant locations. It is the ability to decide where and when to travel without depending on established yacht routes. Longer range allows itineraries that include remote islands, northern waters and destinations where marina infrastructure is limited.
The modern explorer yacht sits between a private residence and an ocean-going platform: designed for extended time at sea, with the comfort expected from a large yacht and the operational capability required for more demanding routes.
As private travel becomes increasingly personalised, explorer yachts are becoming an important category for owners who value access, autonomy and flexibility over conventional cruising patterns.
