Few Australian fashion houses have travelled as far from their origins as ZIMMERMANN. Founded in Sydney in 1991 by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, the label began with Nicky designing dresses in her parents’ garage and selling them at Paddington markets. An early two-page editorial in Australian Vogue brought orders from boutiques across the country, followed by a small Darlinghurst boutique. The sisters soon expanded the brand’s vocabulary by bringing together ready-to-wear and swimwear — an approach that became central to its international identity.

Nicky Zimmermann remains the creative force behind the house, while Simone has been integral to its business development. Their partnership has been central to the label’s longevity, allowing ZIMMERMANN to evolve from a Sydney market label into an international fashion house without losing its original codes: sophisticated femininity, considered colour combinations, distinctive prints and precise cutting.

Among its signature pieces are the house’s printed dresses, sculptural bikinis and one-piece swimsuits, alongside romantic separates distinguished by intricate detailing, fluid silhouettes and bold original prints. Swimwear, in particular, has evolved from the label’s early offering into what ZIMMERMANN describes as a complete “third wardrobe” for its globally minded woman.

For Fall 2026, “Trailblazer,” the house turns towards women who challenged conventional expectations. Utility-inspired sets and jumpsuits reference female mechanics and aviators, while fluid dresses made from men’s silk scarves, lace-trimmed tailoring and lingerie worn as outerwear create a deliberate dialogue between masculine codes and ZIMMERMANN’s established femininity.

ZIMMERMANN does not currently identify an official global celebrity brand ambassador on its official website. Its international profile has instead been shaped by an extensive circle of high-profile women. Kate Middleton, Beyoncé, Kendall Jenner, Margot Robbie and Taylor Swift have all worn the Australian label. Middleton’s appearance in a ZIMMERMANN dress during the 2014 Australian royal tour was particularly influential, helping bring the brand to a much wider international audience.

ZIMMERMANN’s popularity ultimately comes from the consistency of its world. Its romantic prints, polished construction and unmistakable relationship with resort dressing have created a visual language that works equally well on a Mediterranean holiday, at a summer event or within an everyday wardrobe. What began at Sydney’s Paddington markets has become a sophisticated expression of Australian fashion — relaxed in spirit, but increasingly precise in execution.
