Apple Health Age: What the New Longevity Score Actually Means
A person checks sleep, resting heart rate or HRV on a wearable and sees how those numbers change over time. Apple is now taking that idea a step further. Its redesigned Health app introduces Apple Health Age, a feature that places selected health metrics in relation to a user’s chronological age.
The feature sits inside a new Longevity tab, which analyses longitudinal health data across areas including heart health, sleep, movement and metabolic health. Apple says Health Age can use Apple Watch data such as VO₂ max, resting heart rate, sleep and HRV. Users can also add laboratory results including A1c and LDL.
For readers interested in preventive health, the important distinction is what the number does — and does not — represent.
Chronological age is simply the number of years since birth. A health-age score is an interpretation of selected health measurements relative to that age. It is not the same thing as measuring a person's biological age, and it does not predict lifespan.
Apple's announcement also does not disclose the complete weighting or formula behind Health Age. The company describes it as being informed by available scientific evidence rather than presenting it as a clinical test of ageing.
That makes the metric potentially more useful as a trend indicator than as a definitive verdict on ageing. Changes in fitness, sleep, cardiovascular measures or metabolic markers may provide a reason to look more closely at everyday habits and health data.
The redesigned Health app is scheduled to arrive later in 2026, initially in U.S. English, with availability varying by device, region and local regulations. Health Age requires Apple Watch.
The broader shift is significant: longevity tracking is moving from specialist testing into everyday consumer health technology. But a number on a screen remains a summary of selected measurements — not a prediction of how long a person will live.
